Tiller
Will the tiller fit through my fence gate?
The tiller is only 23" wide. It's designed to fit through even the smallest doorway and gate openings.
Should I make two passes or just one?
That depends on how deep you are trying to go. This tiller will till 6" to 9" deep on the first pass. Making a second pass will allow it to till a few inches deeper, depending on soil conditions.
Can I till in the rain?
Yes. The tiller will operate in the rain, however, you will probably get a little muddy. Ideally you will be tilling damp soil. Not too wet, not too dry. Results from tilling wet soil can vary and are generally a little less than ideal.
How deep does it till?
1 to 12 inches.
Is it self propelled?
Yes. It has 2 self propelled tires.
How soon after tilling can I begin to seed or plant?
Immediatly.
Should I water the area before tilling.
Yes. The area should be moist beneath the surface, but not wet and muddy since that will cause the wheels to slip and cause compaction of the soil as you walk behind the tiller.
Sod Cutter
Does the sod cutter require a lot of physical labor?
No. It's self-propelled. This means that the large wheels under the machine will pull it forward so all you have to do is steer.
How much fuel does the sod cutter use?
This Sod Cutter is very fuel-efficient. Most projects will require less than a gallon of gas from start to finish.
How long does it take to cut 1000 square feet of grass/sod?
It really depends on the operator and how you plan to deal with the sod after you cut it. If you have someone rolling up the sod and moving it out of the way , while you are cutting, then you can possibly cut 1000 square feet of sod in about 2 hours.
Is sod heavy?
Yes. Depending on moisture levels, a 5 foot by 12 inch section of sod can weigh up to 60 pounds. You don't want to try to roll up a long row of sod. Instead, you should plan to break it up in to manageable sections. Otherwise, you can find yourself straining to pickup and move large 100+ pound rolls of grass and dirt.
How close can I get to concrete curbs, paths, and sidewalks?
You can usually visualize the distance between the cutting blade and a concrete path by simply looking around and down between the front and back wheels on the side closest to the concrete. Use your hands, eyes, and ears to determine if you are too close to the concrete. If you feel or hear unusual sounds (like metal rubbing concrete) or if you see the blade within an inch of the concrete then steer the machine away from the concrete. This does not require a significant change of course, but rather a gentle nudge away.
How long will I need it?
The average Portland area home owner is done cutting within 2 hours.

The Barreto Rear Tine Tiller is ideal for homeowners, nurseries & professionals who need to till any size plots in medium to heavy-duty soil conditions.
This tiller has all the performance of much larger tillers, but it's designed specifically to work for smaller projects. That means narrower tires and a tine width of just 18 inches, allowing it to work effectively in smaller areas. The tines are designed to work either conventionally or in counter rotating mode. Fingertip controls offer infinitely variable ground speeds both forward and reverse, for incredibly easy operation. Pratima - May 10, 2010 I had plans for the front yard landscape projects for days now which included pulling out the Sod. Renting the Sod Cutter from home depot wasn't an option since I don't have a truck, so bringing the equipment from rental place wasn't an option for me. Couple of days ago, was just searching for innovative ways to easily pull the sod and YardRents site showed up in one of the web pages. First I couldn't believe since I didn't know if they were local store or out of town. Prices were pretty reasonable. Web site is pretty intuitive and the first thing that caught my eyes that rental included Delivery and Pickup!!!! To be able to see and select the rental time and what's the available window is awesome. I also called to get couple of questions asked and Anna was very friendly and made me comfortable. First I was going to rent it for a full day, but Anna gave me a time estimate and I was able to just rent it for 2 hours which saved me money. Dan and Anna delivered, demonstrated, let me do a trial run in front of them and picked up in the evening. It was nice of them to not charge me for extra time. I am planning on renting more equipments from them in future and highly recommend it for anyone who is planning on renting any tools from anywhere else/

 Olivia - May 1, 2010 I rented a rototiller on yardrents.com. I'm relatively new to "heavy duty" gardening, but I needed to till the yard and looked around for rototillers to rent.
I went with yardrents because their prices were better than the big stores like Home Depot and Lowes, especially when you consider they deliver the equipment and pick it up so all I had to do was my project. No time wasted trying to figure out how I would borrow a truck from a friend or rent a uhaul or something to get the rototiller to my house.
The yardrents rep gave me a quick tutorial on how to use the machine (which was extremely helpful as I'm not the most savvy with high powered gardening equipment), as well as a neatly bulleted list of instructions and safety features.

During our first rental, we had planned on spending the day tilling our backyard, but it took a fraction of that time using the tiller offered by YardRents.com. Their tiller equipment was far larger and more powerful than what we could have hauled from a rental store.
This weekend, we rented an auger for fence post holes. Having never operated an auger and being unsure about our soil, it was very reassuring to practice a post hole with YardRents.com's Dan on-site. I was sad to have to give it back after my 2 hr rental :( The whole operation is first-rate....first, you get a text message saying when they will arrive at your place. Then, a super cool guy pulls up in a slick Sprinter van, removes the machine with an electric lift, gives a thorough tutorial on how to use it, takes it to backyard and positions it for me to start my work....you get the point. The fact that delivery is included in the rental fee (which was actually less than a local hardware supply chain store wanted for the same unit, which I would have to transport) was the real deal maker. They dropped off the tiller, showed me how to operate it, and showed up on time for pick up. All around superb service. I will definitely rent from these folks again, should the need arise.

Preparation
Prior To Using the Tiller
Identify any potential underground obstacle and obstructions. This includes possibly calling your local utility companies or 811 to have underground utilities identified.
Clear area of any above ground obstructions and mark all sprinkler heads.
Decide what amendments you want to till into the soil and have them standing-by. These include, fertilizer, compost, gravel, lime, manure, etc...
Make sure tilling area has been watered by rain or hose 24 hours prior to tilling, especially if you have clay in the ground. Soil will till better if it's moist.
Tilling can be loud and dusty. Give your neighbors advance notice of what you will be doing.
The tiller is very heavy. Make sure that you have identified any steps, walls, or barriers that might make it difficult to get the tiller to the jobsite.
Prior To Using the Sod Cutter
Evaluate the terrain to determine how to safely perform the job.
Clear the area to be cut of objects such as rocks, toys, wire or other debris that may be thrown or get tangled in the sod cutter.
Be sure the area is clear of pets and people, especially young children. Never assume they will remain where you last saw them.
Plan to cut sod only in daylight or in good artificial light.
check with the local authorities for underground utility location and depth. Do not operate where there is any risk of contacting underground utilities.
